The Basic service or also known as a service tune-up consists of a basic maintenance revision of the basic vehicle functionalities which normally involves an oil, filter and sparkplugs and fuel and air filter replacement. In some cases, it also includes the rectification of the brake disks and tyres. It usually takes an hour or two depending on the vehicle’s brand and model.

The Basic service is the most common maintenance check-up vehicles undertake if they are serviced within the established manufacturing time frames and most of the parts serviced are easily accessible and spare parts are available for assembly relatively quick.

To avoid problems, it's a good idea to service your vehicle every 10,000 km or once a year in New Zealand. Some vehicle brands may have different service schedules. Here are some general tips:

• First 5,000 kilometers: Have your vehicle serviced to change the oil and clean the air filter. If your vehicle is in good condition, you can then service it every 10,000 km. For tougher driving conditions, consider servicing every 5,000 km.

• 20,000 - 30,000 kilometers: Replace the air conditioning filters to keep the engine running smoothly.

• 50,000 - 60,000 kilometers: Change the fuel filter, gearbox oil, differential oil, steering fluid, belts, coolant, brake fluid, and clutch fluid.

• 90,000 - 100,000 kilometers: Have your mechanic check the spark plugs and brake pads for possible replacement.
